Man jailed for bribing policeman

KUALA LUMPUR: A businessman was jailed 12 months and fined RM50,000 for bribing a senior policeman five years ago to avoid legal action over a raid, seizure and the arrest of 11 foreign women suspected to be involved in prostitution.

Wong Soo Keong, 43, who is involved in the restaurant and renovation business, was found guilty of giving a RM10,000 bribe to Asst Supt Rohan Shah Ahmad from Bukit Aman’s Criminal Investigation Department, as an inducement over the matter.

ASP Rohan led a raid to a premise at Wisma Indah in Jalan Tun Razak where the accused was said to have given him the bribe to release the women from Indonesia and China. A seizure was also made that day which included condoms and other items.

He was said to have committed the offence at another premise at Wisma Indah in Cheras at 1.15am on Dec 21, 2005.

In convicting him on Thursday, Sessions Court judge Rosbiahanin Arifin ruled that the defence had failed to raise any doubts on the prosecution’s case.

Upon hearing this, Wong, who had been on RM8,000 bail, was calm.

Pleading for leniency, his lawyer Liang Chong Beng said his client had to support his wife and two school-going sons.

He said Wong, who studied only up to Year Six, was a first offender and remorseful of his actions.

“A conviction will be a painful sentence for him as it would affect his image as a businessman among the community. It would only lead to slander and result in his customers losing trust in him,” he said.

Liang asked the court to give a chance to Wong to turn over a new leaf.

In pressing for a deterrent sentence, Deputy Public Prosecutor Ng Siew Wee asked the court to consider the gravity of the offence and public interest.

She said the court had to send a clear message to the public that it supports the Government’s intention to curb corruption.

The judge immediately ordered Wong to serve 12 months’ in jail from Thursday and fined him RM50,000 in default of 12 months’ jail.

His lawyer applied for a stay of execution pending an appeal, saying that Wong had a family and four businesses and there was no risk of him absconding from Malaysia.

The judge rejected the application, saying the lawyer could file an appeal over the matter.
