Su Ann: Alice In Wonderland

just got back from GSC. verdict: the movie was disappointing! :( i'm sorry, but i really did expect it to be more .. i don't know. quirky, offbeat, absurd, mad? i'm almost 110% sure everyone has seen it by now so i won't bother review-ing it. the best parts have got to be the scenes with the Red Queen. but Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter -- madly disappointing as well :( visually, of course, Alice in Wonderland was stunning. but logic and the tried-and-tested heroin-to-the-rescue plot have never seemed more boring and predictable!

tim burton & johhny depp could have taken this movie to a much higher level -- what a missed opportunity!

okay fine. ... maybe it wasn't SO bad, and i would have died missing this movie anyway but still. i don't know! i had much higher expectations for the movie because the book was so brilliantly nuts.

:(

BOTAK CHIN the Malaysia John Dillenger.

Wong Swee Chin aka Botak Chin was the most notorious gangster back in the 70's. Botak Chin was born in 1951 in Kuala Lumpur and a school drop out at the age of 15. He then later work as a fishmonger at Jalan Tun Ismail Market, after his mother's death, Botak Chin often hang out with his friends and away from his family. Away from his father's watchful eye's Botak Chin joined the 360 gang (Sak Pak Loh), and start committing small crimes. At the age of 18, Botak Chin illegally owned his first firearms and proceed robbing sprees with his gang. He was caught by police and bought to jail, However within a few months he was released from prison 1974, he formed another gang consisting a few of his friends,Ng Cheng Wong (aka Ah Wong), Beh Kok Chin (aka Pangkor Chai) and Teh Bok Lay (aka Seh Chai).
A month after that, he again purchase firearms from Thailand, he first robbed the illegal gambling den and made off with RM 5800, he then purchase more firearms from Thailand and robbed a bank in Jalan Imbi and fled with RM 95,000. He also robbed mahjong players inside a Chinese temple in Jalan Kolam Ayer and made off with RM10,000. Botak Chin is fearless and determined in pursuing his goals. On 25 September, although one of his right hand men, Chau Kuan (aka Ah Kuan) was shot dead at a sundry shop at Jalan Kovil Hilir, this did not affect his gang activities.
Their biggest robberies was on Oct 26 1975, where the gang fled with RM218,000 after gunning down a security guard delivering money to a horse racing club. With his share of approximately RM40,000 from the robbery, he again went to Thailand. This time he purchased even more weapons adding his arsenal to 19 guns, 5 hand grenades and 1,000 bullets. He was also suspected to practice black magic as in one of the epic incident in Segambut Dalam, he managed to escape unharmed despite his car riddled with bullets.

For more stories about Botak Chin please go to

The life of Botak Chin really amazed me and I really hope that you guys will read it, and know more about him. His no ordinary gangster. He's just a misguided genius.

Hey people! i watched this movie last saturday...
Alto it's not in 3D.sad to say that i watched in Summit which can never affort 3D movies =(
Neway, its called HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON.

My bro drag me into the cinema at first. i tot this is gona be like the Sherk or toys stories...
But... it was actually really nicE! ahha... I think this movie is really really cute!
Its a bout a barbarian kid who lived in a place where everyone, everyone except him kills dragons. Apparently, he's the son of the so called *Ketua*.
the movie is produced mainly to the kids... so its scary and at the same time making the kids feel safe by having the cute looking dragons that means no harm and all.
I think the movie is more towards trust and faith. Its a father-son thingy.

Theres this girl named Astrid that i really liked! =p At first when i saw her, i was imagining how would i like in those *barbarian* outfits (compared to Zena the worrior princess, this is even better) and also her hair! omg! she's blone, she's skinny, tall, pretty, strong (Actually more towards manly but the combination of her is just awesome) But manly hmmm.. she too got herself into trouble with the dragon and nearly cried about it. oh well, she kissed a guy too. haha somehow, they just combined her in a way that makes me like her =p
And guess wat? the dragons are really really cute! haha completely harmless...
The way the hero in the movie communicates with the dragon is so hillarious!
Well, some of you guys have not watch it yet so i'm not gona crack the endings and all.
I just think it's a good movie. Oh, one more thing that is taugh tru this movie is that saying sorry is not hard at all. when you're in a trouble, apologizing is a way to start. So watch it ppl! try 3D there's gona be lota flying and flamings =p

Loong:New Invention? "Sensors turn skin into gadget control pad"

Tapping your forearm or hand with a finger could soon be the way you interact with gadgets.

US researchers have found a way to work out where the tap touches and use that to control phones and music players.

Coupled with a tiny projector the system can use the skin as a surface on which to display menu choices, a number pad or a screen.

Skinput, Chris Harrison
The sensors can spot many different locations on the arm

Early work suggests the system, called Skinput, can be learned with about 20 minutes of training.

"The human body is the ultimate input device," Chris Harrison, Skinput's creator, told BBC News.

Sound solution

He came up with the skin-based input system to overcome the problems of interacting with the gadgets we increasingly tote around.

Gadgets cannot shrink much further, said Mr Harrison, and their miniaturisation was being held back by the way people are forced to interact with them.

The size of human fingers dictates, to a great degree, how small portable devices can get. "We are becoming the bottleneck," said Mr Harrison.

Skinput armband, Chris Harrison
A finished device would be far smaller than the bulky prototype

To get around this Mr Harrison, a PhD student in computer science at Carnegie Mellon and colleagues Desney Tan and Dan Morris from Microsoft Research, use sensors on the arm to listen for input.

A tap with a finger on the skin scatters useful acoustic signals throughout the arm, he said. Some waves travel along the skin surface and others propagate through the body. Even better, he said, the physiology of the arm makes it straightforward to work out where the skin was touched.

Differences in bone density, arm mass as well as the "filtering" effects that occur when sound waves travel through soft tissue and joints make many of the locations on the arm distinct.

Software coupled with the sensors can be taught which sound means which location. Different functions, start, stop, louder, softer, can be bound to different locations. The system can even be used to pick up very subtle movements such as a pinch or muscle twitch.

"The wonderful thing about the human body is that we are familiar with it," said Mr Harrison. "Proprioception means that even if I spin you around in circles and tell you to touch your fingertips behind your back, you'll be able to do it."

"That gives people a lot more accuracy then we have ever had with a mouse," he said.

Early trials show that after a short amount of training the sensor/software system can pick up a five-location system with accuracy in excess of 95%.

Accuracy does drop when 10 or more locations are used, said Mr Harrison, but having 10 means being able to dial numbers and use the text prediction system that comes as standard on many mobile phones.

The prototype developed by the research team sees the sensors enclosed in a bulky cuff. However, said Mr Harrison, it would be easy to scale them down and put them in a gadget little bigger than a wrist watch.

Mr Harrison said he envisages the device being used in three distinct ways.

The sensors could be coupled with Bluetooth to control a gadget, such as a mobile phone, in a pocket. It could be used to control a music player strapped to the upper arm.

Finally, he said, the sensors could work with a pico-projector that uses the forearm or hand as a display surface. This could show buttons, a hierarchical menu, a number pad or a small screen. Skinput can even be used to play games such as Tetris by tapping on fingers to rotate blocks.

Mr Harrison would not be drawn on how long it might take Skinput to get from the lab to a commercial product. "But," he said, "in the future your hand could be your iPhone and your handset could be watch-sized on your wrist."

Loong:soon, you will be using your hands or forearm or any parts to interact with gadgets, cool isn't?...check out the video in the website and its really cool that you can even play games and uses your finger to control.... :-)

have a good Saturday..cheers

reduce, reuse, recycle

Today have seen our senior's exhibition at L3- MPH. The theme is about how to make the earth more healthy by reuse, reduce and recycle. I think this exhibition is very sucessful as it had deliver a message to every people that had go into that exhibition. This exhibition was take part by all mass communication student :) (And what was truth is that Miss Nalenna was beautiful with the two big ear ring and the make up :D) Through this exhibition, I had learn that every people is the media. They always deliver the msg through conversation. No matter what course you in, how old are you, what gender are you and also what race and religion you belong, what language you use, it's doesn't matter, the important part was that a msg had delivered. The theme of the exhibition was very appropriate for this society nowadays as many people had realized how important was the environment to them. It's time for us to take action to protect our mother land and don forget to join the "EARTH HOUR" at 27 March 2010 at this saturday from 8.30pm-9.30pm.

Peace <3

No, I am not asking you to be a vegetarian just like me. I am not promoting how good to be a vegetarian and how proud I am to be a vegetarian. Somehow, what hurts me the most is when beasts abuse animals like raccoon dogs, foxes, rabbits, snakes, sheep and such for fur. I once wore a crocodile bag but now since I know how these innocent animals got to be skinned out, I vow I'll never wear fur or anything that has animal skin.

I was crying when I watched Eva Mendes: Fur Trade Video at PeTA. Somehow, when I clicked on a link, a video about how China cut these animals' skins and fur. And they are all still alive. I repeat - A L I V E.

No, I am not trying to scare all of you. I'm not stopping anyone to love what they love or what they always wear. I just feel, sad for these animals. I just can't believe people kill animals for such human's survivor. I somehow, cried when I watched this.

Last Saturday, which was on the 20th of March 2010 was my mother's birthday. For this reason, we went to a hotel for a buffet lunch/tea time with her friends, who always get together on their respective birthdays(I know, irrelevant, but wait, I'm getting there)

One of my mother's childhood friends, Dr. Hamidah Merican, who is always there is the Executive Director of a women's rights movement known as Sisters in Islam(mainly for Muslim women rights). I recently found out that Marina Mahathir is part of this movement. Previously, I have heard stories about the movement, what it stands for and other relevant matters. However, on this particular day, when Dr Hamidah Merican arrived at the buffet, there was a chatter amongst the adults congratulating her and asking her a bunch of questions. This got me curious, and that was when I asked one of my mother's other friend,"Auntie, what is all the fuss, what happened?" and got a reply "She met Obama, you didn't know?" and I went " Oh my god, what? No, I hadn't heard."

This, again, got me started as my excitement rose for being in the same room as a person who has met Barack Obama(other than Faisal Hassan if I'm not mistaken :) ), the president of the United States of America, as well as leaders from various countries. This is because she had also traveled to Australia and England to meet with other prominent figures to discuss the purpose and reason for the existence of Sisters in Islam. Dr. Hamidah Merican had discussed the matter of caning women which surfaced during Kartika's trial, the part time model/mother who had been caught consuming alcohol. She addressed the fact that, imaterial of this woman's actions, women should not be caned under any circumstances as Islam teaches one to care and provide for women, not hurt them.

This shout out may not have anything much to do with media but I am sure this occurance has broken a few grounds for Sisters in Islam as this group finds it difficult to voice out their views and opinions on Islamic Law here in Malaysia but has got all the other main political figures hearing them out. Even Barack Obama had voiced out his support for the group during Dr. Hamidah Merican's meeting with him. This goes to show the power of women if you try to mess with them or think that they are weakly able to be stepped on.

On second thought, I guess the media can be involved as Dr. Hamidah Merican could not have possibly gotten contacts or set up a meeting with Barack Obama or vice versa if not for the modern media :D .

found this on the internet; someone took a snapshot of the column. not sure if it's meant to be a joke (on 2nd thought, it really is sort of funny, just a little bit), but this article has set feminism back by like a whole freakin century. "College really isn't necessary." staff reporter? pffffft!

have a good sunday all! :)

Su Ann: Green Zone

suffering from writer's block. cannot seem to write another word for my feature article assignment :( this is crazy! (btw, what's the word limit, anyone?) hence! here i am.

okay, so has anyone seen "Green Zone"?

(cannot believe i've seen Green Zone and not AiW.)

(but really, i was forced to. Anil loves war movies. it's like playing CS, with better effects.)

it stars Matt Damon. and basically his was the only name i recognized in the whole castlist -- others include Yigal Naor, Said Faraj, Faycal Attugui and Aymen Hamdouchi. (you see what i mean!) IMDB gave Green Zone a 7.2/10 ratings. and i don't know about you guys, but i have this thing (OCD alert!) about checking reviews before and sometimes, after i watch a movie. and you know, 7.2 for IMDB is not bad!

movie plot:

it's 2003, set during the first month of the Iraq war when the weapons of mass destruction used to justify the American-led invasion failed to materialise. Chief Warrant officer, Roy Miller (Damon) is the head of the WMD (weapons of mass destruction) search unit in Baghdad, assigned to find and secure Saddam's chemical weapons using Pentagon-approved "intel". only problem is, his unit keeps coming up empty at every site they are ordered to search for WMD. his superiors keep telling him to keep his mouth shut, and gradually his frustration leads him to CIA specialist, Martin Brown. together, they team up to uncover the truth. but what is the truth?

in the movie (apparently, it mirrors reality), Lawrie Dayne works for the Wall Street Journal and it was she who first wrote about the possibility of the existence of WMD in Iraq ... which subsequently led to the war. and after the destruction of a city and the loss of so many lives, not being able to even FIND the WMD? and the chance that it probably doesn't exist at all? chilling.

i thought about the influence of media a lot during the movie.

"U.S. military and political leaders charge in ready to do anything they can convince the American public to accept."

am suddenly reminded of the movie "Wag the Dog."

so my point is -- the movie was okay. granted, the chasing-and-shooting scenes (what's a matt damon movie without them?) get really tiring after a while, but other than that, it's pretty worth it :)

the movie makes you think.

Massive sandstorm turns Beijing's streets yellow

BEIJING (Reuters) - Tonnes of sand from deserts in China's interior blew into Beijing on Saturday, shrouding China's capital in a yellow-orange haze that authorities warned made the air quality "hazardous".

There were few people out on streets where pedestrians could taste the dust. Many of those who had ventured from their homes were wearing facemasks, and some left footprints in the yellow film that had settled on the city's streets.

Beijing's weather forecasting bureau gave the air quality a rare "5", or hazardous, rating and added that it was "not suitable for morning exercises". Parks and open spaces are usually packed from early in the day with enthusiasts doing martial arts, ballroom dancing and other activities.

The sandstorms underline the environmental degradation investors identify as one of the long-term constraints on growth in China, and concern about its impact has made a less resource-intensive model of growth a priority for Beijing.

The government has spent millions of dollars on projects to rein in the spread of deserts, planting trees and trying to protect what plant cover remains in marginal areas.

But the battle is being fought against a backdrop of rising average temperatures and increasing pressure on water resources after three decades of booming growth.

The sandstorm hit Beijing around midnight, carrying huge amounts of dust and heading south east, the official Xinhua news agency said. In northern Changping district, the wind reached speeds of up to 100 km per hour (60 mph).

The swirling clouds of dust and sand had blanketed the interior provinces of Qinghai and Gansu, and western Xinjiang region, before sweeping over the capital, Xinhua said.

OMG..the earth is getting worse and worse...2012 coming?

no!! I'm not prepare to die yet...==''''

Art is Something That You Can Get Away with.

I asked my friends about this film, Brokeback Mountain, they all reacted the same way: "Why would I want to watch a gay movie?"

First of all, there is nothing wrong with being a homosexual. I, of all people, know that. Just because someone is gay or a lesbian or a bi, doesn't mean that they eat people. It's their choice. They are grownups. People need to be open minded. You don't need to think outside of the box or be a modern city yuppy to realize that the choices people make for their sexuality is what they truly desire.

Moving on, this film is a great film. I don't understand why people won't watch it. I must admit, the sex scene between Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger is a bit, well, awkward to watch. But the story, the acting, the script of this film are just awesome.

In a way, this film is not very much different from Twilight. You see, Twilight is about forbidden love. So is Brokeback Mountain! Films about forbidden love between two lovers are always very emotional and entertaining to watch. What makes this film any different than other films about forbidden love? Nothing. The only difference is that they are both guys. That's all.

Don't see this movie as nothing more than a gay movie because it is a masterpiece and for you to judge it before even watching it is truly shameful.

Alice in Wonderland

Nothing is different. Alice in Wonderland is taken by a novel written by Lewis Caroll and has been remake as a movie in the year 1999 and also 2010. Now, I'll differentiate what makes it different :-

1999:
directed by Nick Willing
queen's head size is normal
no name for the rabbit
March Hare isn't a timid rabbit
no white queen
Mad Hatter is boring
not about engagement
alice's dress is yellow and never changes

2010
directed by Tim Burton
queen's head is big
McTwisp is the name of the white rabbit
March Hare is a timid rabbit
entertainment included
there's a white queen
Mad Hatter isn't boring
Alice is going to get engaged
alice's dress is blue and changes

So there - as you can see, these two movies are way too different even though the characters and the movie title is the same. Somehow, I have to say that AIW 2010 is much more good instead of AIW 1999. There's no entertainment and it really shows the badness of the queen.

Many people say this is the worse Tim Burton's movie ever; too much animation and kinda boring. But I disagree with them. For me, this is the best besides Corpse Bride. I mean, come on ~ every person has their own opinion in everything and I really love how Tim describes Mad Hatter as really a mad person. He's talented and knows how to make hats.

It is really fantastic and somehow I know back in 1990s, there weren't too many effects to create animation and AIW 1999 Chessire was Whoopi Goldberg =P. That's the only thing I can spot.

So people, watch the trailer and if you think it's worth to spend RM10 for it, go! And do not forget to grab Almost Alice; soundtrack for Alice in Wonderland :)

Dear Agony

Breaking Benjamin has finally come back with their newest album, Dear Agony right after Phobia (2006) have gone silent for such a long time.

Their first single; I Will Not Bow was featured in a movie called Surrogates and I've to say that I do not like their music video; where Burnley is singing and a few of the scenes are taken from that movie. Unlikely, it looks unreal.

On last January, their second single Give Me A Sign was released in every radio channel in America. Somehow, I love the music clip of this song as it gives me the goosebumps and big impact. In the video, it inserts three different stories from child, old man and a man who willingly to give his life to the Death of the Angel instead of taking his girlfriend's life away.

Dear Agony consists of eleven great tracks :-
1. "Fade Away"
2. "I Will Not Bow"
3. "Crawl"
4. "Give Me a Sign"
5. "Hopeless"
6. "What Lies Beneath"
7. "Anthem of the Angels"
8. "Lights Out"
9. "Dear Agony"
10. "Into the Nothing"
11. "Without You"

Among all these tracks, songs that you should listens are I Will Not Bow, Give Me A Sign, Dear Agony and Without You.

Have fun!

Wife forced into sex with 50 men

KUALA LUMPUR: A husband’s erectile problem has led to a painful four years for a housewife who was forced to have sex with over 50 foreigners while he directed and filmed them.

The 61-year-old woman said her husband would recruit the men from nearby rubber estates and supervise her on the various moves and positions while he recorded it on video.

He would also assault her if she refused to consent to the acts.

She kept silent about the abuses as she did not want her aged and ill parents to worry about her.

However, recently she could no longer withstand the “crazy acts” of her 66-year-old retiree husband and ran away from her home in Sarawak on March 6.

She then sought the help of MCA Public Services and Complaints Department chief Datuk Michael Chong yesterday.

The woman, identified only as Chia, said she married the widower, who was from the same village as her, 12 years ago.

“He treated me well and loved me very much until he had erection problem four years ago,’’ she said.

Chia said since then, he began recruiting foreign workers, mostly Indonesians, from nearby rubber estates to have sex with her.

In return, the husband would buy the workers beer or pay their handphone bills.

“He wanted to see me having sex with other men. He would tell me what styles he wanted for that day and record our acts,’’ she told a press conference at the department yesterday.

She said he had even pressed her to have sex with multiple partners but she refused.

“In the beginning, he only wanted me to do it once a month but eventually, he became very aggressive and got me at least five men a month for the past two years,” she added.

She is currently seeking shelter at a friend’s home in the peninsula.

“I am very scared and do not want to go home,’’ she said, adding that she was also worried that he would make the “films” public.

Chong said he would help Chia to seek legal advice on the matter.

As from the title, you can know what is this about. This is the Earth Hour which organized by WWF and now had started all over the countries. The first Earth Hour had started at Sydney at 2007. This activities is switch off the light at 8.30 pm at 27 March every year for 1 hour which the main purpose is a call to stand up, to take responsibility, to get involved and lead the way towards a sustainable future. I think this activities is meaningful as I had experience in National Service last year. This activities should become a habit of all indoviduals. Not necessary must off the light at 8.30pm everyday, bt also can save our world by doing the tiny things such as throw rubbish to dustbin which is a very simple act but people always forget that..

Just a simple act to stand with the all the people around the world..
so..
PLS switch off light!!

Tiger Woods' Follower

Who doesn't know Jack Neo in Singapore? He's the most famous director and producer in the local industry. He directed Homerun, Where Got Ghost?, Being Human, Money No Enough and so much more. Apparently, his gossip with an actress-model, Wendy Chong; made the "Manglish" world turns upside down.

Five days after news first broke of Jack Neo’s extramarital affair with 22-year-old actress-model Wendy Chong, the popular film-maker addressed reporters at a short, drama-filled press conference yesterday, one which ended in tears, his wife’s collapse — and shouts at the media. - Malaysian Insider

What else can I say about this? We, now have Tiger Woods' followers. His wife fainted right after she gave her words at last Thursday press about her husband's rumors.

What do you think guys? Comment on this.

Seoul, South Korea (CNN) -- Police have arrested a South Korean couple whose toddler starved to death while they were raising a virtual child online, authorities said.

The couple fed their 3-month-old daughter once a day between marathon stretches in a local Internet cafe, where they were raising a virtual child in the fantasy role-playing game Prius Online, police told local reporters Friday.

Prius Online is a 3-D game in which players nurture an online companion, Anima, a young girl with mysterious powers who grows and increases her skills as the game progresses.

Police have not identified the 41-year-old father and 25-year-old mother, who lived in Suwon, a suburb south of Seoul. But the father apologized, speaking to reporters.

"I wish that she hadn't got sick and that she will live well in heaven forever. And as the father, I am sorry," he said.

The baby reportedly died five months ago.

South Korea has one of the world's fastest broadband networks. Seoul has won international awards for e-governance. Online gaming teams are sponsored by major conglomerates and 24-hour, high-speed Internet cafes, known as PC Bangs, dot every urban neighborhood.

Police said the couple had lost their jobs and used the game as an escape from reality, especially after the birth of their premature baby.

"They instead played an online game in which they raised a virtual character so as to escape from reality, which led to the death of their real baby," Chung Jin-won, a police officer in Suwon, told Yonhap News Agency.

"South Korea remains a very conservative society so people who fall outside the norm can come under severe stress and pressure," said Michael Breen, the Seoul-based author of "The Koreans."

"The Internet has provided such people with a paradise to escape to and simply get lost in."

RM5 Roti Tisu.

Ignore my face. Just look at the roti tisu. Should I say long or big? I have no idea. Yesterday (030810), my friend brought me and my other two friends to SS2 to have a mini birthday celebration. By the way, I AM NOT BLOGGING ABOUT WHAT I DID YESTERDAY. I just wanna tell you that this is the first time ever that I got to eat roti tisu with the price of RM5.

I don't know if it's worth it for you guys but for me - it's not really worth it. Like I mean, du'uh, it's big/long but yet oily. Kinda oily. And oh, don't worry - it tastes pretty nice. Like somehow, at the end of the crispy edge, you can taste a bit of honey. HAHAHA.

I can't remember what's the name of the restaurant but it's located at SS2. I believe the name is Original Penang Nasi Kandar Sdn Bhd. Something like that la.

What do you think of the price? =))

Chinese Guy Still Hates Justin Beiber

Okay, am sure everyone knows Justin Beiber. Be it the Jesse McCartney wannabe, the monster looking one, so on so forth. Being a celeb, you're either loved or not. So I bumped into this vid of this Chinese guy (who's really a cina apek dude weyhh srsly haha), who yes, the title says it all, still hates Justin Beiber. So yeahh, do enjoy the funny yet slightly irritating clip. I am neutral about Justin Beiber btw hoho!

What do you think? Hee.

All hail Rakan C.

Just when I was aimlessly browsing the Internet, I came across this video. Not just any video. In fact,it was my first time seeing something like this.
I was surprised but not surprised...yea.
So,aside from answering their walkie-talkies,patrolling around the hood and saving the day,
these are what (some) police officers do!
Or so to speak.

I assumed they are just some junior officers or that sort of rank.
Which also explains why they didn't have the guts to include their faces in the frame.
Take note that I'm not trying to make people stereotype cops.
But if you want to,go ahead.

Enjoy!

(Reuters) - China must urgently address the physical fitness of the nation's youth or run the risk of raising a generation incapable of fighting the Japanese in a future war, the head of the country's top sports university said Thursday.

The government must immediately invest some of its new wealth in ensuring that children take regular exercise, Beijing Sports University president Yang Hua told the sports group of the largely ceremonial advisory body to China's annual parliament.

"It is time for the Chinese nation to improve the physical fitness of our next generation," said Yang. "If we miss the next three to five years a whole generation will be next to useless.

"If there was another war against Japan, would the younger Chinese be able to fight the Japanese one-on-one?

"The government has enough money for banquets and for luxurious office buildings, do they not have money for children's physical education?" he added.

Japan invaded and occupied much of China between 1931 and 1945. Rancour over Japanese wartime atrocities has subsided as a diplomatic flashpoint, but it continues to shape Chinese public attitudes toward Japan and its people.

The fitness of China's young dominated the opening session of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference's sports group, a normally sedate gathering turned into a media circus this year by the presence of hurdler Liu Xiang.

The former Olympic and world champion 110 meter hurdler, unconventionally dressed in jeans with his shirt tails hanging out, was making his first appearance as one of the 22 members of the committee.

"A healthy body is the foundation of everything," he said. "I hope I can be an example to attract more attention to athletics, and encourage our children to be stronger and stronger."

The emphasis on academic education in China -- Chinese teenagers preparing for the university entrance exams often study for more than 12 hours a day -- has been blamed for the lack of exercise undertaken by young.

A year after China's elite athletes succeeded in topping the medals table with a cascade of gold at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, August 8 was declared "National Fitness Day."

"A survey has shown that Chinese teenagers are behind their Japanese peers in almost every indicator it measured," Jiang Xiaoyu, a senior member of the organizing committee for the Beijing Games, told the meeting.

"The physical fitness of the young is a matter of strengthening our country and our Chinese race."

Su Ann #6 Teen Girls’ Apparent Suicide Pact Stuns Pa. Town

By Kathy Matheson

Peggy DeVaco places a candle at a makeshift memorial to Gina Gentile and Vanessa Dorwart on March 1 in Norwood, Pa. The high school sophomores were killed by an Amtrak Acela train in what was believed to be a suicide pact.
NORWOOD, Pa. - As the high-speed Acela train came thundering down the rails, a teenage girl screamed at her friends to get off the tracks.

But Gina Gentile and Vanessa Dorwart did not move. They hugged as the train bore down on them at speeds up to 110 mph, carrying out a suicide pact that the witness herself had backed out of only moments before.

The loss has shaken Norwood and its neighboring towns just outside Philadelphia. There were hints the pretty and popular high school sophomores may have been suffering from depression, but experts say such suicide pacts are extremely uncommon — especially among teens. Pacts are made because suicide is so daunting — and they are broken for the same reason, said Thomas Joiner, a psychology professor at Florida State University.

"This is a deeply fearsome thing," Joiner said. "We're not wired for it; our bodies will recoil from it."

As close as sisters
Gee and Ness, or Gee-Gee and Nessa, were funny, outgoing and as close as sisters, said classmates at Interboro High School in Prospect Park. Dorwart's obituary describes a teen with "a wonderful, caring personality, amazing blue eyes and a pretty smile." The second of five children, she had played youth soccer and softball and was a former Girl Scout. She would have turned 16 on Wednesday.

Gentile, whose father died a few years ago, was one of six children. The 16-year-old didn't judge her friends, always thought of others first and "was never one to worry about herself," said Patricia Roeder, a junior at Interboro.

But Gentile had been hard hit by the recent death of her boyfriend, who was killed by a car while riding his bike. And Dorwart's parents say their daughter seemed withdrawn from family events and had talked of seeing a school counselor, even as she planned her upcoming Sweet 16.

On the snowy morning of Feb. 25, police say Gentile and a friend cut class with the intention of killing themselves. They walked the two blocks to the Norwood regional rail station, where Dorwart — who had stayed home that day — met up with them. As the train barreled its way south from Boston to Washington, Gentile heard the whistle and stepped on the tracks. Dorwart ran to join her, even as the third girl reneged and implored them to stop.

Text messages between Dorwart and the witness seem to confirm this was no accident, police said. The Delaware County medical examiner agreed, ruling the deaths suicides.

Underlying problems
But Kimberly Dorwart, Vanessa's mother, finds that hard to accept.

"I know she wanted to live," Dorwart told the Delaware County Daily Times. "I know my daughter did not leave here with the intention of being hit by a train."

The Associated Press was unable to contact the Dorwarts; Gentile's relatives have requested privacy.

About 1 percent of suicides result from pacts, most of which are between older, partnered adults who have endured a recent hardship, said Brian Daly, an assistant professor of public health at Temple University. Experts say suicide clusters — single occurrences that happen closely together — are more common in adolescents. Last year, the city of Palo Alto, Calif., was sent reeling by four teen suicides-by-train in less than six months. Two suicidal students from Manasquan High School in New Jersey were fatally hit by trains within two months in 2008.

Media reports that romanticize or sensationalize suicide can encourage copycats, said Dr. Paula Clayton, medical director of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. At the same time, she said, suicides should not be covered up.

"It's a fine line," Clayton said.

She noted nearly all suicides stem from
underlying psychological problems such as depression. Nationwide, about 4,400 people between the ages of 10 and 24 kill themselves annually, according to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

‘It just breaks your heart’
Pat Carr, who sells train tickets at the Norwood station, is grateful she wasn't working the day of the suicides. And as the grandmother of two Interboro students, Carr was taken aback at the loss.

"It just breaks your heart, my God," Carr said Monday. "They're so young."

Later that day, teens gathered to grieve outside the ticket office at an impromptu shrine of candles, balloons, stuffed animals and flowers. Some brought homemade posters of Dorwart and Gentile, covered with photos and messages. A few feet away, Roeder sat next to a pair of crosses overlooking the tracks. She said no one will ever understand what took place that morning.

"What happened here is going to stay here," Roeder said. "You're never going to know."

As she spoke, Roeder slowly became surrounded by a group of students who began to share their feelings as well.

Then a train hammered by — WHOOSHWHOOSHWHOOSHWHOOSH! — and the teens fell into an uncomfortable silence.

That was like a slap in the face, said one.

No, said Roeder, that's just life moving on.

teenage suicide pacts -- sounds romantic, but when taken out of the context and applied to the real world ... it's just plain sad. just thought of putting it up here, seeing as we're all (mostly all, anyways) still in our teens. you know, i'm pretty scared of death. i know it's part of life and all that, but really -- there's just so much more to life, so many things to do and so many places to go. depression, some of us go through it but to the extent of taking one's own life? why? it's hard to imagine a friendship or a bond so strong it would lead to two people (or more, god forbid) influencing each other to plan out their deaths together.

a few years ago, i read a book by Jodi Picoult titled "The Pact." it was about two teenagers who had known each other since birth and, as they grew older, started to date. the girlfriend was depressed, and she had requested for the boyfriend to kill her. she ended up dead ... he lived. of course there's more to the book than that, but reading it has given me an insight into teenage suicide pacts. the way Picoult wrote it, it's like -- the two of them shared such a strong, intense bond that he couldn't help but feel her pain and her overwhelming sadness, so that even though he did not want her to die (much less to kill her himself), he did it anyway simply because she did not want to live. he did it, as a parting gift for her.

i suppose most people who take part in a suicide pact have bigger issues than we'd ever come to realize, and perhaps a pact makes it a little easier and less frightening. i mean, suicidal people who get together (i.e. the news above) would only serve to encourage each other in their suicidal behaviour. but i'm pretty sure suicide isn't an easy decision, no?

i don't know.

i just think it's sad.

It's offical that an asteroid wiped out the dinosaurs!!

LONDON, March 5 — A giant asteroid smashing into Earth is the only plausible explanation for the extinction of the dinosaurs, a global scientific team said yesterday, hoping to settle a row that has divided experts for decades.
A panel of 41 scientists from across the world reviewed 20 years’ worth of research to try to confirm the cause of the so-called Cretaceous-Tertiary (KT) extinction, which created a “hellish environment” around 65 million years ago and wiped out more than half of all species on the planet.
Scientific opinion was split over whether the extinction was caused by an asteroid or by volcanic activity in the Deccan Traps in what is now India, where there were a series of super volcanic eruptions that lasted around 1.5 million years.
The new study, conducted by scientists from Europe, the United States, Mexico, Canada and Japan and published in the journal Science, found that a 15km-wide asteroid slamming into Earth at Chicxulub in what is now Mexico was the culprit.
“We now have great confidence that an asteroid was the cause of the KT extinction. This triggered large-scale fires, earthquakes measuring more than 10 on the Richter scale, and continental landslides, which created tsunamis,” said Joanna Morgan of Imperial College London, a co-author of the review.
The asteroid is thought to have hit Earth with a force a billion times more powerful than the atomic bomb at Hiroshima.
Morgan said the “final nail in the coffin for the dinosaurs” came when blasted material flew into the atmosphere, shrouding the planet in darkness, causing a global winter and “killing off many species that couldn’t adapt to this hellish environment.”
Scientists working on the study analysed the work of palaeontologists, geochemists, climate modellers, geophysicists and sedimentologists who have been collecting evidence about the KT extinction over the last 20 years.
Geological records show the event that triggered the dinosaurs’ demise rapidly destroyed marine and land ecosystems, they said, and the asteroid hit “is the only plausible explanation for this.”
Peter Schulte of the University of Erlangen in Germany, a lead author on the study, said fossil records clearly show a mass extinction about 65.5 million years ago — a time now known as the K-Pg boundary.
Despite evidence of active volcanism in India, marine and land ecosystems only showed minor changes in the 500,000 years before the K-Pg boundary, suggesting the extinction did not come earlier and was not prompted by eruptions.
The Deccan volcano theory is also thrown into doubt by models of atmospheric chemistry, the team said, which show the asteroid impact would have released much larger amounts of sulphur, dust and soot in a much shorter time than the volcanic eruptions could have, causing extreme darkening and cooling.
Gareth Collins, another co-author from Imperial College, said the asteroid impact created a “hellish day” that signalled the end of the 160-million-year reign of the dinosaurs, but also turned out to be a great day for mammals.
“The KT extinction was a pivotal moment in Earth’s history, which ultimately paved the way for humans to become the dominant species on Earth,” he wrote in a commentary on the study. — Reuters

I'm Bored With Westerns. So I'll Target the Asians.

Oh yes that is right. I believe the earthquake is now bored with the Western, Africa or North America and now it hits on us; Asia and Taiwan is the main target.

6.4 magnitude of earthquake rattled Taiwan during rush hour this early morning (Thursday March042010). Twelve people were injured and no deaths were reported recently. Exactly 8.18AM (local time southern city of Kaohsiung), the motherland was storming her anger, which makes a textile factory in Tainan blazed in flame-tears. No tsunami alerts were reported too - apparently.

I somehow feel that the motherland is not trying to give us a warning but yet asking us to repent in some way and be good to nature. To all movie lovers, stop thinking about the movie 2012 as media is just playing with your bloody mind. Please don't put too much hope on media. They're the biggest liar in the world.

Back to the news. So yeaaah, besides that, some large buildings and apartment were reported cracks by local residents and Dr. Shuo Hong told CNN that while he was having a meeting with his colleagues at his hospital, he felt the quake in about 20-30 seconds. He was debating whether or not to run for shelter but somehow the hospital is safe.

Man jailed for bribing policeman

KUALA LUMPUR: A businessman was jailed 12 months and fined RM50,000 for bribing a senior policeman five years ago to avoid legal action over a raid, seizure and the arrest of 11 foreign women suspected to be involved in prostitution.

Wong Soo Keong, 43, who is involved in the restaurant and renovation business, was found guilty of giving a RM10,000 bribe to Asst Supt Rohan Shah Ahmad from Bukit Aman’s Criminal Investigation Department, as an inducement over the matter.

ASP Rohan led a raid to a premise at Wisma Indah in Jalan Tun Razak where the accused was said to have given him the bribe to release the women from Indonesia and China. A seizure was also made that day which included condoms and other items.

He was said to have committed the offence at another premise at Wisma Indah in Cheras at 1.15am on Dec 21, 2005.

In convicting him on Thursday, Sessions Court judge Rosbiahanin Arifin ruled that the defence had failed to raise any doubts on the prosecution’s case.

Upon hearing this, Wong, who had been on RM8,000 bail, was calm.

Pleading for leniency, his lawyer Liang Chong Beng said his client had to support his wife and two school-going sons.

He said Wong, who studied only up to Year Six, was a first offender and remorseful of his actions.

“A conviction will be a painful sentence for him as it would affect his image as a businessman among the community. It would only lead to slander and result in his customers losing trust in him,” he said.

Liang asked the court to give a chance to Wong to turn over a new leaf.

In pressing for a deterrent sentence, Deputy Public Prosecutor Ng Siew Wee asked the court to consider the gravity of the offence and public interest.

She said the court had to send a clear message to the public that it supports the Government’s intention to curb corruption.

The judge immediately ordered Wong to serve 12 months’ in jail from Thursday and fined him RM50,000 in default of 12 months’ jail.

His lawyer applied for a stay of execution pending an appeal, saying that Wong had a family and four businesses and there was no risk of him absconding from Malaysia.

The judge rejected the application, saying the lawyer could file an appeal over the matter.

Come May 1st RON95 is RM2.10

By Syed Akbar Ali

That's right. The Government is quite firm on "restructuring" the fuel subsidy on
May 1st. Here is how it will work. First the price of RON95 will go up to RM2.10 per litre. Those who are eligible for the subsidies will have to swipe their MyKads at the gas stations and they will still get gas at the "old" price of RM1.80 per litre.

Those who are not eligible will have to pay RM2.10 per litre. This is based on todays world prices for oil. If oil goes up or down between now and May 1st, then the prices will be adjusted.

Eligible means cars below 2000
cc while cars above 2000 cc are not eligible. Between now and May 1st, you must register your MyKad and your car (if it is below 2000cc) somewhere. Details to be announced I think. Those with cars above 2000cc need not bother. You dont get the subsidy anyway.

Petrol stations will be equipped with a hand held device which can read your MyKad so that you can get your subsidy and also to read the amount of petrol you have used. The Government plans to allow only 100 litres of subsidised petrol per car owner per month. Only one car will be allowed for the subsidy.

All gas stations will be linked online (by May 1st) so that your usage of petrol will be monitored. The Government has talked to all the oil companies and they have all agreed.

Diesel will still be subsidised and commercial vehicles will not be affected. Only petrol driven privately owned passenger vehicles are eligible or not eligible for the subsidy.

What this means is that owners of cars below 2000cc will not see any reduction in their living expenses. They will still pay RM1.80 per litre for RON95 like they do today - no change there, except they will now have to flash their MyKads everytime they buy petrol, because they will only get say 100 litres of subsidised petrol a month..

Teacher scratched my son, alleges father

2010/03/03

KANGAR: "First, it was ketuk ketampi (squats), then, it was the words anak kamu malas (your son is lazy) written in his exercise book.
"Last week, he came home with a deep scratch on his cheek," said Zakaria Kasa, the father of Year One pupil Zaidi Putra.

Zakaria, 39, claimed his youngest sonwas scratched on his cheek by his English teacher, in her 50s.

"It happened last week but the mark on his cheek is still raw. My son called me to come to his school and when I arrived there at 8.40am, he was crying.

"At first, he did not inform me about how he got the scratch. Then, about 2pm when I went to the school again to send him some food, I saw him crying again.

"It was then that he told me the teacher scratched his cheek for not completing his homework."
Zakaria claimed he confronted the teacher but she denied scratching the boy.

He sent his son to Tuanku Fauziah Hospital before lodging a report at the Simpang Empat police station the same day and also informed the state Education Department.

On Monday, he said the school headmaster called him to apologise.

Kangar district police chief Superintendent Abdul Rahman Mohd Noordin said police had recorded statements from the headmaster and several pupils.

Teacher hits female student over question on perfume

2010/02/08

KULIM, Mon -- A female student was allegedly struck on the head by a male teacher at Sekolah Menengah Lubuk Buntar here yesterday for asking him whether he was using a perfume.
Nurasyira Zakaria, 13, who was treated for swelling on her head at the Parit Buntar Hospital, lodged a report at the Bandar Baharu police district headquarters here last night.

"It started when the teacher asked who among us was using a perfume while writing on the blackboard. Nobody admitted using it.

"I then asked the teacher whether he was using one. He took offence and struck me on my head with his hand and a book," she told Bernama when met at her house at Kampung Bukit Tok Gula near here today.

Nurasyira, a form one student, said she complained to her father, Zakaria Mamat, 50, about the incident when she reached home at 3pm. - Bernama

...:::[][][]:::...

This is what I understand. The boy was scratched when he did not finished his homework. The girl was hit on the head because she questioned her teacher about perfume. Which part of these two articles shows that these students deserves these kind of punishments?

So yeah, whats happening to teachers nowadays? They are supposed to be role models, educators who at least have diploma in teaching, so why on earth do they result into something like this? Yes, the students made mistakes by not completing their homework or simply making too much noise in class, but why result to this kind of punishment?
